Discovering the Vaudois, a historic presence in Luberon
Activity in Mérindol :
The Waldensian trail at Mérindol: an approach to the region's past, where beliefs, power struggles between royalty and papacy, territorial occupation, migrations and conflicts have forever marked the villages and the Provencal massif. 12 km - 500m ascent
Departure from the village square.
We walk through the narrow streets of the old village: the oil mill, the temple, the church...
Then we head for the Musée de la Muse. A first look at the history of the Vaudois in the museum's outdoor area (explanatory panels).
The walk continues up the hill to discover the remains of the medieval castle and the old village. Stop at the summit: Waldensian memorial, and take in the view of the Durance valley to the south, the Costes range, the Alpilles, and the Petit Luberon chain to the north.
Descending from the château, we pick up the GR and head up the hill towards Peyre Plate. Talk about the endemic vegetation, the fauna present in the massif, and significant events in the area (the great fire of August 1980).
Arrival at the Font de l'Orme forest house: discovery of this educational area with the Arboretum.
We continue on to the Plaine de St Phallez area, a reminder of this specific Crau-type area.
From Plaine de St Phallez, climb up to Roquemalière rock, a large limestone cliff overlooking the Durance plain, and the village's emblematic rock. Learn about the geological features of the Luberon massif.
Descend Roquemalière towards the Sabatier valley, then return to the village.
Option to visit the indoor Musée de la Muse.
Possibility of tasting local products (tapenade, olive oil, local wines...) at the wine bar La Cave à Aimé, in the heart of the village. Charge in addition to the advertised price.
