Chromies – La couleur en mouvement
From 28/05 to 05/07/2025 between 11 am and 1 pm.
Closed Monday, Tuesday and Sunday.
Event in Avignon :
Galerie Rousset is devoting an exceptional exhibition to René Ben Sussan, featuring a group of 16 oil paintings produced between 1967 and 1978.
His graphic identity is based on a masterful organization of space: each canvas imposes a sculptural presence, harmonized by a graphic lightness.
These portrait-like, centered compositions illustrate a quest for movement through color, in which free forms are organized around sinuous curves and enclose flat areas of color.
Her subjects are mainly inspired by mythology, nature, everyday life and distant cultures. Born of a sensitive memory nourished by travel and discovery, these works translate a chromatic choreography through imaginary figures.
To discover René Ben Sussan is to plunge into a chromatic universe that offers itself to us through the rhythm of curves, harmonizing to give shape to compositions where color becomes language.
Presentation of the artist :
René Ben Sussan is a painter, engraver and illustrator of Greek origin. Born in 1895 in Thessalonica, then under Ottoman domination, he settled in Paris around 1920 and obtained French nationality in 1926. The artist built up a body of work on the bangs of the major schools and movements of his time.
His career began with rapid recognition: he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1921, then at the Salon des Tuileries from 1924. His early paintings, influenced by his sojourns in Marseille and Spain, reveal a delicate eye for Mediterranean landscapes, intimate portraits and scenes of daily life.
It was in the post-war years that his pictorial language reached full maturity. His encounter with Alexander Calder, with whom he became close, influenced his move towards a form of organic abstraction, where color, line and rhythm become the vectors of a vibrant space.
A tireless traveler between France, England and the United States, René Ben Sussan continued to enrich his work with cultural experiences and encounters throughout his career. He died in Paris in 1988 and is buried today in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
