Event in Avignon :
An oriflamme is a cloth banner usually ending in two points and placed at the top of a mast.
Already present in some of his shows, Jean Vilar asked six painters to design oriflammes for the 1961 Avignon Festival, each with his own graphic universe. Having previously belonged to the imaginary world of the Middle Ages, Vilar gave this object an emblematic dimension for the city of Avignon and the imaginary world of the Festival.
During artistic practice workshops led by visual artist Pauline Tralongo in October and November, several oriflammes were created by Avignon residents and are now hoisted high on the façade of the calade at the Maison Jean Vilar. They take their place alongside reproductions of the 1961 banners. The pennanting is the occasion for a festive highlight.
