Avignon
Midnight Souls
From Friday 1st to Saturday 2 August 2025 from 10 pm.
Event in Avignon :
Choreography by Carolyn Carlson, assisted by Sara Orselli. On the occasion of the exhibition "Othoniel Cosmos ou Les Fantômes de l'Amour", ten exhibitions in Avignon from June 28, 2025 to January 4, 2026
Two exceptional performances in the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des Papes in Avignon.
Performed by prima ballerina Hugo Marchand and dancer Caroline Osmont of the Paris Opera, accompanied by Juha Marsalo of the Carolyn Carlson Company.
With music by René Aubry and Philip Glass.
World premiere in collaboration with the City of Avignon, Avignon Tourisme and the Avignon Festival.
This choreography was built around works by Jean - Michel Othoniel specially installed on the stage of the Cour d'Honneur of Avignon's Palais des Papes.
A monumental installation imagined by the sculptor for this unusual venue. More than 10,000 glass bricks metamorphose the architecture of the Cour d'Honneur, creating a landscape that hosts three immense, ghostly sculptures in mirrored stainless steel bricks.
After the two performances of Midnight Souls, the on-stage installation of "Ghosts of Love" will remain on view throughout August and most of
of September 2025.
This event is made possible by the city of Avignon, which gave Jean-Michel Othoniel carte blanche to take over this stage steeped in history.
The artist chose to work with Carolyn Carlson, Hugo Marchand and Caroline Osmont to create a totally new show. It is in keeping with their shared desire to bring different art forms into dialogue, and to offer the public an unprecedented sensory and emotional experience, offering a unique symbiosis between dance and sculpture over the course of two evenings.
